I would like to request support for S3 mode on TrueNAS. I know that a lot of people (enterprise environment) have no need for this, but I think that we mere mortals do.
My context:
My NAS PC stays IDLE 80% of the time. I have just few tasks done on it weekly. Although it is crucial to maintain it. However, I don't need it on all the time or 24/7. This would consume a lot of resources unnecessarily. And the process of turning on and off takes time(long boot), not to mention that I have to remember to manually do it. With that feature, I could keep a CRON JOB, suspending, and another one on my machine doing WoL.
My electricity bill is equivalent to 0.22 USD. By doing the math, the NAS's annual consumption would be around 488 USD. That in my country is the value of a new set of HDDs for my pool. Or a 10TB IronWolf. And there's still a little left.
Last year I made a post asking about this possibility. I noticed in other comments (searching around) that on the part of ixsystems this feature seems "useless". But it is not, try to understand. I'm (and others) just ordinary users in a home context.
Apparently it is possible to make S3 on FreeNAS, but something prevents the machine from returning. It goes to rest, but when it comes back it has no video and no answer. Just keeps dark.
