I was told on the forums to raise the issue here. ( https://www.ixsystems.com/community/threads/snapshot-retention-policy-is-being-ignored.87091/#post-604345 )
I have 5 periodic snapshot tasks. I had 3 replication tasks to different destinations. Things were working normally where the snapshots were kept for 7 days, then deleted. Remote snapshots matched. I added a new destination that took longer than 7 days to replicate. This caused all 5 periodic snapshot tasks to hold snapshots longer than 7 days. The replication tasks started replicating more than 7 day replications to all the destinations.
The new destination replication has finally caught up a few days ago. But I have net to see any snapshots be trimmed by the system to have only kept the last 7 days. Nor have any snapshots been trimmed on the destination replication targets.
Back in the day with the old legacy replication this was never a problem. I'm not sure exactly when the problem popped up.
My expectations would be that "Hold pending snapshots" would hold snapshots longer than 7 days while replication is going. When all replication jobs are "Success", the system would trim old snapshots and then ultimately trim the remote snapshots to match.
