SCALE: Mount USB Devices to VM

Description

Please allow the mounting of USB devices to Virtual Machines.

An example use case would be licensing dongles, zwave/zigbee radio's, serial devices or even USB flash drives. Proxmox and other Virtual Machine platforms have this feature.

As per https://ixsystems.atlassian.net/browse/NAS-108713?focusedCommentId=151459 I am also using Home Assistant and having to passthrough the entire PCI controller currently to allow HA to see the USB Bluetooth Dongle. As a result I have to monitor the UPS remotely from the host (Truenas) when the client (Home Assistant) should only see it remotely.

I support this proposal.

My case is zigbee dongle, Bluetooth dongle and UPS device. I had to setup nut server in homeassistant vm and monitor it from truenas scale. It's weird)

It's much more better to passthrough zigbee dongle and Bluetooth dongle and not passthrough the others.

I do not know if this is possible on TrueNAS Scale, but maybe package usbip can be used as a workaround? If that package is present in TrueNAS Scale that is, with that you can access USB devices over the network. See for example usbip.sourceforge.net

Agreed with Chris - not overwriting the libvirt XML would make the virtualization much more powerful.

I'm stuck with a single pcie slot (mini ITX) and need to use a USB controller to pass through zigbee to home assistant and a graphics card to pass through to plex.

Same here single USB zigbee for Home assistance passthrough instead on controller
